CHAPTER 2: Dream

There it was again. Eren was lying on the ground in the woods, sticks and stones digging into his back, pinned to the ground with his maniacal father holding a syringe over him.

It was always the same.

Eren would get injected in the arm, and his vision would blur as his father moved onto the next person, and from the person's screams, it was a girl of his age.

And her face was etched into Eren's brain, until she herself came to become known as (F/N) (L/N), the newly hired mercenary.

But if she too was there when Eren was turned, wouldn't she too be a Titan?

That information itself made Eren uneasy. Why doesn't she tell commander? What if in reality, she is a Titan here to annihilate the strongest military branch in the walls?

Eren's thoughts haunted him and ate away at his brain. There was no way in hell he could tell anyone about it. They'd think he was crazy and lock him up again.

The only person left to ask was the devil herself.

And that's exactly what he plans to do.

----

A dim, pale light streamed through the dusty window of the spare room they had given to you. No birds were chirping, nor did you hear the sound of boots clamping down the hallways. With a huff, you sat up, your back sore from the hardness of the uncomfortable bed. Groaning, you began to strip off your nightgown into your usual attire, black skinny jeans along with a forest green overcoat.

You looked at the uniform that hung on the door knob, belts jumbled in a mess.

"No way in hell am I putting on that BDSM crap," you mumbled to yourself, clipping your belt around your waist. Abandoning your sniper underneath the bed alongside your backpack, you slung your katana sheathes over your shoulder and opened the wooden door with a creak.

Trying to remember the path to the training grounds, you observed the signs and plaques on the doors and walls until you found your destination.

It was a bit cold outside, the air stinging your cheeks as soon as you stepped outside. Looking around, you saw there were no other life forms outside, just you, the wind, and the rising sun, something that you rarely experienced since you spent so much time underground or fighting in the dark.

"Oh, so even people like you enjoy the little things in this caged in life," a voice called from behind you. You didn't flinch nor turn.

Fiddling with your belt of weapons, you responded, "People like me? Should you be talking, Titan boy?"

"Touché, Titan girl," Eren chuckled, joining you at your side. "Sorry for coming off so rude yesterday. I was just--"

"Confused why the girl from your nightmares is here?" You finished, reading him like an open book. "I know the feeling."

"So... You are from my district," he implied, guiding you to a dusty wooden bench by the building. "Right?"

You shook your head and sat beside him, pulling out a knife from your belt. "No. In fact, I was sent after your father to stop him from doing what he did to you. But I was so young then. I messed up and got myself in this predicament," you mumbled, looking at your reflection in the silver glint of the knife. "Though it's rather convenient. Not as much as yours."

"Huh? What do you mean?" He questioned, raising an eyebrow at you. The wind rustled through his brown hair and made him shudder as he watched your grip on the knife tighten.

"You can morph into one of them, correct? The bulky, indestructible creatures who devour humans like snacks."

"If you put it that way..."

"Well I can't. Honestly, your father injected me with a prototype. It gave me regenerative powers yeah, but..." You took the knife and drove it into your thigh, only to have it bounce off and clatter loudly to the ground. "It also gave me this shitty ability."

Eren's mind flipped back to when you entered the mess hall yesterday, a gash in your jeans, where he could have sworn he saw a slight red mark.

"And if you're thinking about the gash in my leg; I can only receive damage from Titans themselves. Not weapons or any shit like that."

"That's an amazing--"

"It's not. It just means that I'm forced to help humanity strive for victory till the very day I die by the hands of one of them," you cut in, watching the now risen sun blaze through the faint clouds.

"It's a nightmare basically," Eren commented, watching the lights flicker on in the mess hall, as the cooks strolled in, preparing breakfast. Birds began to chirp, signaling that it was for sure morning for everyone.

Nodding at him, you looked up at the sky and mumbled, "It looks like the happy day'll have to wait."

"What do you mean?"

Bells rang all around the HQ, causing cadets to wake up in panic, in a scramble for their uniforms and gear.

The bells signaled that the Titans have caused a commotion, or worse, infiltrated a wall.

You pointed at the faint red streaks in the sky, in the direction of the first wall.

"Hmph. Never believe that the god of this world will give you a gift of beauty without countering it with bad fortune," you sighed. "Looks like I'll be dispatched first. See you out there, Eren Jaeger."

Eren watched your retreating figure walk towards the awaiting, long trail through the forest that led to the wall, where distinct red streaks were shot off again.

"Eren! Come on!" A voice yelled, urging Eren to snap out of his shock.

"Unn."

Turning around, he saw that you had already disappeared from sight.

Guess he'd better impress you out there.
